At the end of April, I was lucky enough to attend the ‘International Business Etiquette Train the Trainer Course’ at AIM in Hong Kong. Within the five-day professional course, instructor Priscilla Chan’s teaching style kept me fascinated. Ａfamous Chinese saying in Liji says ‘comprehension is a noble person’s teaching’, meaning a noble person’s teaching is easy to comprehend, enabling people to understand the meaning and experience the teaching principles. Only by understanding the knowledge and skills by yourself can you plant roots in your heart, especially when etiquette is an art with principles but without model answers. Priscilla is exactly a teacher good at making you understand. The course is designed to be practical with a lot of interactive exercises, enabling us to understand and apply knowledge through them. Priscilla would provide advice to elevate the level of everything. Her teaching style makes us master the principles of international business etiquette quickly and understand how to use them in our daily life.

Within the five-day course, not only have I acquired knowledge about etiquette, but more importantly the golden rule of being a teacher and how to teach. These valuable treasures will accompany me on my new journey to becoming an etiquette instructor.

This is particular the case for the final practice session of the course. The teacher helped us master how to help more people with your professional knowledge!

Witnessing an instructor who leads by example

An instructor ‘instructs’. Knowledge is easy to accumulate, but what’s valuable is the mode of thinking an instructor conveys. The mode of thinking inspires us to have a genuine inside-out transformation.

Priscilla’s teaching is designed and led based on each student’s difference. You can tell she cares about her students’ feelings a lot through every small detail. You experience how she teaches and leads by example. Although five days was short, the five days made us look at things from the instructor’s perspective and understand what to do in order to really help the students.

From witnessing a friend’s transformation to experiencing Priscilla’s unique insights and super strong professionalism in her color style course to becoming a loyal fan of hers, once again my eyes are wide opened. I have acquired different knowledge about etiquette. 

Because of occupation and industry, in fact most people have some understanding of etiquette and rules, but after the five-day course, I realize etiquette is not just for teaching etiquette, but for teaching people to experience and understand. Once you have empathy, you have learnt to experience and understand. Then you can apply etiquette to people in different industries and with different cultures. This is a very advanced level of etiquette.

During the three-day Image Essentials Color Course in Hong Kong, the teacher shared her life journey as an image consultant for over 10 years. It was very rewarding, not just in academic sense, but also in terms of mental growth. During the course, Teacher Priscilla deeply analyzed what colors actually were, what the value of colors was, breaking down the three qualities of colors and incorporating them together again. Colors are alive. One must consider a person’s personality, psychological needs and occasions in order to understand the details and communicate effective when servicing clients. Incorporating what I have learnt, I have been deeply inspired. I am thankful for the teacher, thankful for my desire not to settle, ‘love myself; love myself so much that I want to marry myself’.

Singapore AIM’s ‘Journey to Excellence’ brought me technical and academic rewards. As a student of color and style analysis and a color consultant with contemporary experience, I enrolled in the Business Color Mastery Course just for broadening my horizons.
